Hi, this is my first time having plants especially inside and I was hoping someone could tell me if I need to change anything with how I repotted my succulents. So my coworker told me to plant my succulents in mushroom compost but google said that compost has bad drainage so I added a little bit of dirt that I just scooped up from my yard. I really don’t want my first time owning plants to be a big fail especially because I really like the plants I picked. (PS: I got them from Walmart if that matters any)

I typically keep my succulents in a cactus/succulent mix in a pot with drainage. I'm sure you can keep it in other types of soil as long as you do not water until the soil has completely dried out. You can always use an organic fertilizer in the spring and summer (which would be the point of compost). I'm sure your succulents will do great. Good Luck!

Be sure to give them an airy and gritty mix! You can add coconut coir, volcanic pumice, extra perlite, orchid bark, or gravel, but not all is needed. Succulents have similar care types to cacti, so not much fertilization is needed. Water when the leaves get squishy or start to pucker a little bit, and make sure you’re really watering thoroughly! They don’t mind if the watering is a little overdue. Place them within 2 feet of a window, but I put them right on a windowsill. My succulents don’t get pests that often, so I wouldn’t worry. Hope this helps!! :)

Both will do much better with some sun. For soil, if using potting soil or even cactus soil, you need to amend it with some gritty add ins, as Lien as suggested. For beginners I always suggest shallow terracotta pots. They help avoid the overwatering problem because they are porous. And as Lien has said, soil must be totally dry before water drenching. If they get lots of light including sun, they will color up from sun stress. Sounds negative but it’s a positive thing to happen. Pics of my sun stressed plants.

I wouldn't use glazed ceramic. Terracotta is best for succulents, even though I wish I could have pretty pots. And I always use a mix of cactus succulent soil and gritty mix. Ratio would depend on pot and growing environments. I grow indoors in the south, so I use terracotta and around 35% soil and 65% gritty mix.
