Volver a The Cactus & Succulent Circle

Hey plant friends! I watered my jade plant and the water immediately… | The Cactus & Succulent Circle | Comunidad de Planta

Hey plant friends! I watered my jade plant and the water immediately drained through, so I believe my soil and pot are appropriate and well-draining (used Miracle Gro Succulent and Cactus Potting Mix). My question is I went to feel the soil after watering and upon digging around in the soil I found some of it to be dry. Which I thought was surprising because I watered it completely (like flooded by accident) and it all drained out. So I thought the soil would’ve been soaked. Is this normal for soil to be a little dry after watering? I had a friend look at it a while ago and tell me it looked like it needed to be watered but I know jade plants don’t like to be overwatered so I let it dry out and follow Planta’s schedule.

Have you tried bottom watering it? It gives the roots ample opportunity to get all the water they need without risk of over watering!

Highly recommend this!! I switch back and forth between top and bottom watering (depending on how I’m feeling 🤪) If you only bottom water every now and again you’ll want to top water to flush the soil of any extra mineral deposits.

It could be the soil. I’ve had a terrible experience with miracle grow, but with the opposite problem. I added an entire bag of perlite to it, and after only watering it once the soil remained completely moist for 14 days straight. Nearly killed everything I potted it in within 2 weeks, but I managed to save them by repotting them all. I use Espoma now, it’s never failed me, and their succulent soil tends to dry out within 2-3 days, but never within the same day. If the plant has been in the soil for a while (a year, years, etc.), it could be that the soil has become hydrophobic. If that’s the case, you’ll want to repot it in new soil. I also agree with @crazyplantperson on bottom watering. If you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend it, and there’s plenty of quick tutorials on how on YouTube. Just look up “how to bottom water plants”. I do it for all my plants, and all my jades really love it.

Thanks!! I’ll try bottom watering. I’ve never done that before, so I’ve wondered how I would know when the soil had enough, but I’ll look up videos on YouTube.

Any update on the jade? Do you still need any help with it?

Thanks for checking in! I was going to wait to try the bottom watering when Planta tells me to water again. Unless do jades like to be in dry soil? Should I try the bottom watering now given how the soil reacted when I watered it about a week ago when I made his post?

Jades want their soil to be bone dry whenever watered. Currently, as the weather is gonna start getting colder come September, Planta recommends waiting every 12 days before watering. Just give it a good 12 days to completely dry out before you try bottom watering. The bottom watering helps prevent overwatering too.
