Got four new babies today!!! The jade plant and the air plant are both from my local farmers market, and the other two are from tractor supply! I just repotted the jade and will be repotting the other two shortly but I have them in their pots they came in with drainage holes inside of a larger pot so they should be good!! I just gave them all a big drink and I’m so excited to have them in my little (not so little anymore) plant family now!!!

I can give you a few tips for her if you’d like, if you’re new to jades.

Well in terms of the basics 1. They thrive on neglect. Might sound crazy, but I used to water mine maybe five times a year and it grew a ton from that. Mine turned 30 this year. They are succulents, and they are very hardy to surviving drought. The easiest way to kill it is by overwatering. Water when the soil is completely dry and “bottom water” it (it’s very easy and a simple youtube video can show you how) to avoid root rot, the other big killer.

      2. Check it for root rot, pests, and what kind of soil it’s in. If there’s no pest or root issues, don’t repot unless it’s not in well draining succulent soil. If it’s not, or it is and it’s still not draining quickly when you water it (where you can see the soil literally absorbing the water and sucking it down to the bottom of the pot) consider repotting it in a different mix or simply adding perlite to the mix (but wear a mask when adding perlite. You don’t wanna inhale any tiny particles or possible “dust” from it.)

    5. Finally, they are draft sensitive, and should be taken from the window in the winter if it gets cold in your area during that time. Put it near the window so it at least gets enough sun, but isn’t at risk of a cold sitting spot or draft. That’s about it with this plant. Aside from the draft risk and turning, it’s an extremely low maintenance plant, and I’d always suggest them for beginners. Wish they were more popular, honestly, cause they can live forever if you want them too. My final tip if that if it gets really big and bushy, it’s ok to trim some stems down. You can gift them to friends very easily. Mine was a cutting from my abuela’s original that she gave each of her daughters. It’s become a very special part of my family. Wish you the best of luck with this jade. Hope this helps!

Ooh ok final tip: the jade lets you know if it needs to be watered when the leaves get a little too squishy. If they’re firm and the soil is dry (and you HAVEN’T watered it recently), you can still water it, but if you haven’t watered it in a while and the leaves get shriveled or start to fall off, it needs a drink.
