I inherited this guy from a coworker and I’ve been caring for it (poorly) for a couple years. I’ve no idea what type of plant this is….some kind of succulent. It has new growth, but the more mature shoots are constantly yellow at the base and I feel like the leaves drop pretty frequently. Any ideas on how to improve caring for this guy? Thanks in advance!

That's a beautiful plant you got there! Google says it's called Senecio barbertonicus. I have had just a few succulents and cacti, so not an expert here, but succulents usually turn yellow when overwatered. I water mine thoroughly about once a month and otherwise just leave them be. Hope this is helpful!

In my experience the bottom leaves are absorbed by the plant first and it’s normal. I know when to water based on when the bottom leaves are shriveled up.

It’s a happy bean. 😍 I have one and it loves a lot of sun and airy succulent mix soil. I give it a succulent fertilizer every other watering because it’s constantly growing and given good light or a grow light. It will go through periods where the leaves start to yellow at the bottom and I always monitor to make sure that it’s getting enough water and light. Mine was dealing with some pests and I think it was also going through seasonal weather issues. I would remove all of the dead, dried leaves on top of the soil. Is there a drainage hole? You might want to put it in a nursery pot or a pot that has good drainage since it’s a succulent.

Thank you! Do you think I can cut back the longer stems and propagate or no? I’m hesitant, but I’d also like it to be more bushy

Yes! They do well propagated. Let the stem callus over for a day and then pot in soil. It will won’t look great while it’s developing roots but be patient.
