Desert Witch

Just picked up these two from Walmart from their VERY thin selection. Crassula Ovata “ogres ears” and Echeveria “Dark Moon.” Anyone have any suggestions on keeping these guys healthy? Especially with the dark moon. I noticed she’s flowering and I don’t have enough experience with succulents to know what to do.

You need to water it a bit more and make sure it has a hour more of sunlight than it usually does but when it’s done flowering you can cut back on that stuff

But don’t overwater it either or else the stem will rot and it will die

For the Jade, let it dry out completely. They usually get a little squishy when they’re thirsty. So just do a squeeze test once you know the soil is 100% dry, and then soak the soil.

Would you suggest giving it a good bottom soak? Or is it better with top watering?

It’s better with bottom watering. And try to put the jade in the brightest window. They like full sun. Rotating it every week or so helps the leaves get even amounts of sun so they don’t grow unevenly. Succulents typically thrive on neglect, especially with water. Wait until the soil is completely dry, and frankly, I wouldn’t recommend watering them as much as the app recommends. Checking the soil every two weeks is a good rule of thumb. I water my jade about once a month, sometimes more if it’s really hot or during the summer, its growing season. Hope this helps!

Yeah, absolutely, they really don’t need a lot of water. I keep snoozing the reminder from planta until the lower leaves feel less firm. They will also start wrinkling if they are really thirsty. Echeveria will need water more often than the jade, but same thing. Wait until soil is dry and look for signs it needs more water. Their lower leaves will feel less firm when they need more water. Remember, it’s easier to kill a succulent by overwatering than under-watering. You got this!❤️

My other tip if you got them from Walmart is to keep them from any other plants you already have until you can check the soil for root rot or pests. Box stores like Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s are infamous for pest infestations because they usually place the plants right next to the constantly opening automatic doors to the outdoor gardening center, or potted in the wrong type of soil for the plant, cause the people who work there aren’t trained or hired to be experts on plants. It’s also just a good rule of thumb to check any plants for pests or root rot before putting them near your other plants
