Johanna :)

Any help is greatly appreciated! I got these last year April as a birthday gift. They’re “hen and chicks” from Aldi. I’m not sure what the technical name is of the plant to add it. The pictures from the identifier don’t look the same. How do I replant this?? Do I need to replant them? Are they supposed to be jumping out of the pot?? Not sure what to do with all of her! Thank you in advance!

The genus is sempervivum and the most common one you see in retail is S. tectorum. Like the echeverias, their cultivars are growing overwhelmingly fast. The reason they don’t look like the identification pictures is because they’re starved for light and this app is a little loose with naming/taxonomy. Their current leaf arrangement increases surface area in which they can absorb light, that’s why theres leaves in all directions. Excess nutrients and water can also cause this elongation (more so excess water). But they love light—full sun and then some! Light will slowly correct the leaves, they’ll begin to flatten out and the new growth will do the same. With time they’ll begin to look similar and they’ll make an attempt to face the sun, but elongated stems are there for good. It will be a few seasons of growth before they look like what you’d expect from a houseleek—just on a long stem. Some people pay BIG money for that elongated stem!

I think it looks kind of fun and kooky like this! The stems will start sprouting new leaves eventually too. Sometimes I prefer to let succulents do their wild thing
