Beeps!

Friends have been watching my plants while I’ve been out of state. I left in the middle of may and just now got this picture. No clue how this happened- how do I avoid this in the future? It was also attached how it looked before. Was it too much sun? I still don’t get back for another couple weeks. Is it okay, or is it not going to do well?

The succulent isn’t getting enough sun so he’s stretching out to find it. Unfortunately You won’t be able to get him short again. But he’s not unwell. If you truly want that tight succulent look, your best bet may be to look at propagating a new succulent from either the base of this one or the leaves. To prevent further stretching see if your friend can get him more direct light or grow light time. But again, he’s NOT sick, just reaching up on his tippy toes for light.

It was in direct sun the whole time, I actually requested they move it away from the window because I was worried it was getting too much after seeing how it got. That’s a shame, though, I’ll make sure to make a new propagation! Thanks for the advice!

Just because it's in the windowsill doesn't necessarily mean it is receiving direct sun especially if it's not a south facing window. It could definitely use more light if it's stretching like that.

It got stretched out in direct sun?? That’s so odd 🧐

Are you saying the second pic is direct sun? Direct sun means the plant can ā€œseeā€ the sun. With no curtains shut and blinds drawn up, not just slats opened. And it needs it for several hours. But it can be propped. Cut off the top with enough stem to help stabilize and plant it into quality succulent soil. Water the stem base as needed until roots develop. The rest of the plant, you can prop the leaves. It takes a lot longer.

You can increase the light inside by placement but you’ll never get direct sun through a window pane. UV is significantly reduced by glass. It’s why we don’t get sunburned in our houses or cars.

Oh no lol the second was just a picture i took for some friends in a cool arrangement lol, it’s in an east facing window and seemed to be doing well before sent it off to my friend. It happens unfortunately! I’ll have to get some grow lights when i move back to my apartment in case i notice anything like that again with the propagations i make from it

I don’t know if the lamp in the first picture is that grow light, but you could always to add one and boost light

So second pic, it is already showing signs of needing more sun. So once it was moved even further from the window, the etiolation progressed further to the legginess seen in pic 1. An echevaria needs to be directly in that window sill for max light benefits. If you see how the bottom rows of leaves are ā€œopening upā€, that is an indicator it’s not receiving enough light. Echevaria leaves should be much tighter together like a rose that just bloomed.

Second ones a bad picture but you’re right. I just had it there for the pic, it lives in my east facing window sill back home But unfortunately i don’t have a patio or any way to put it directly outside. Considering a grow light for the propagations i make from this plant

Idk why planta kept telling me it was getting too much sun 🄲 had me second guessing myself and moving it around which probably didn’t help. I’ll make sure round 2 gets way more light

They might be getting a bit leggy from lack of light. Even though they are getting a lot of Sun it is only from one window making hen stretch to the sunniest spot (higher up.) Ive also heard is might be a sign of too much water but I think your fine. To fix it maybe put it outside on a porch or balcony or even just in an outdoor partly shaded spot. You could also move them to a room with light from all angles. You can totally get them back to what they were before too. You can either cut the new growth off or if you fix what’s wrong they could slowest get a bit better. Hope this helps’
