New plant lady here! I have had this jade plant for a little over a year and only within the last few months really started caring for it well. It has since taken OFF and I have no clue where to go from here. The branches are getting tall and I’m worried they’re going to start breaking… does it just keep growing up tree style? Does it eventually hang? What do I do?! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I think it could use a bigger pot now and I also found these babies growing in the soil. What should I do with those? All input and tips appreciated! Tell me what you would do next! Thanks so much ❤️

It’s not gonna become a trailing plant. It’ll probably try to become more tree like. from the looks of it, it looks to have gotten lanky from previously being in lower light conditions, so if you moved it to a brighter spot in the past few months, that’s probably what started the new growth. Jades need at least 6-8 hours of sunlight every day, so place it somewhere in the brightest window you’ve got and it should grow faster. As for the current look of it, if you’re worried about the branches getting too too heavy, I marked some spots where you can take some cuttings and propagate them. You could either put the cuttings into their own pot once they form roots or place them back around the original Jade plant to make it bushier over time. This is up to you, though. Pruning is very common for older jades, especially if you want them to continue to mature over time without getting too top-heavy. The “stalks” that make it look leggy at the moment will not shrink down, so the only way to make the Jade more bushy is to cut the current stalks down to let them start over in a brighter spot so they don’t become leggy again. I know that sounds a little scary, and it’ll take some time for the original Jade to grow the leaves back, but if you want it to grow larger and live a long time, pruning it is the best way to go.

I tried to mark with the blue lines where you could make the cuts. The trick with cuttings is to cut between the “lines” going up the stems. Those will be the nodes, and you can twist the lower sets of leaves off to provide more nodes for the cuttings to form roots out of. Each “notch/line” and spot where a leaf has grown out of is a spot where roots can develop. Allow the cuttings to callous over at the ends where they were cut for a day or two, then you can either directly stick the stems you cut into some fresh cactus mix, or dip the ends into Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder to speed the process up. Adding the powder onto the nodes will also help the cuttings grow roots faster. Once placed in soil, I would recommend bottom-watering the plants, letting the soil completely dry out between waterings. By that, I mean placing the pots into a bowl or container, filling the container with water while the pot is in it, letting it sit in the water for 10-20 minutes, then taking it out to drain in the sink or dry. Bottom-watering is great for the original jade and the cuttings, as it will help the jades develop a stronger root system, and with the cuttings, it will make new roots reach down towards the water over time. Bottom-watering also helps prevent attracting pests to moist top soil and prevent overwatering. If you’re new to jades, are you looking for any other care tips for this type of plant? I’ve got quite a few of them, and they’re one of my favorites, so I’m happy to help anyone new to them get into the art of jades 😊 For one thing, they need to be in terra cotta pots with at least one drainage hole, or plastic pots with multiple drainage holes. Avoid glazed ceramic pots as those are meant for more tropical plants. As for soil, they need to be in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix. Please avoid repotting it in Miracle Grow’s soil, even their cactus mix. It’s not well-draining enough for this plant. I swear by Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for all my jades, and find it at my local plant nurseries or Ace Hardware.

Thank you so very much for sharing such helpful information! I will definitely be giving her a new pot and soil soon and I’m going to give her the “haircut” you recommended today. Eek! It is a little scary lol! Thanks again!!

You could definitely propagate if you want but it should just grow in “Tree style “
