I received 2 prickly pear paddles from a friend’s outdoor plant. One I planted lying down and the other with where the paddle was separated from the mommy cactus. Less than a year later and the paddle I laid down thrived. Found this very interesting and wanted to share 🌵

Wow thanks! So you laid it down flat in the soil? I have one that I stuck in soil where it came off the mother. It’s been in soil for 5 months, I’m nervous to check the roots. I think I’ll try your method.

Yes, just lay it flat on the soil. I think I may do it to my other cactus paddle since it’s shown no growth.

Where is the part that is laid down? Is it under the soil now?

it curled up into a U shape. so the little stump to the right was the bottom of the paddle and the growth came from the top of the paddle

Hi there. Actually that would make perfect sense. When out in nature it’s not like there’s someone to help. - Today on PRICKLY PEAR PRAIRIE - Patty Pear: Oh my. I think I’m breaking away today. I can feel it. Ok they say I should get ready. Stand tall. Spines at my side. Think it. See it. The perfect dive. Oohh the wind here I go. {snap} Patrick Pear: OMG think she’ll do it? Shh the perfect dive. OMG she did it. Her bottom landed in the dirt and she’s standing tall. Patty how do you feel? Patty: A bit dizzy. And I feel like I smashed my bottom into the earth. Ask me tomorrow. Patrick: Ok will do. Oh I bet it’s nothing. I could do better than her. Oh here comes that animal maybe the’ll snap me off today. Nope. Oh here comes that tail. {snap} Yes. I’m free! {belly flop} Ouch. Patty: What happened to your training? Patrick: I was so excited I forgot. Patty: Well, we’ve got to get you in the dirt. Come here beast, come here! Come here! Bury him. Come here you stupid animal. Oh. It’s gone, tough one Patrick. Patrick: But I don’t wanna die like this. Patty: That’s the brakes dear. That’s why they always tell us to pack the extra SPF. Now you’re going to fry on one side like a tortilla. Patrick: Why? Why couldn’t I land in the dirt standing vertically like everyone else does? Why Almighty Prickly Pear? WHY? HELP! Paramedic Paul Pear: Sir we heard you yell for help. Just lay still. You’re going to be ok. Patrick: My hero! Paramedic Paul: Just doing my job Sir. Patrick: Are you single and free for dinner one night. We could just lay around and watch the stars. Paramedic Paul: I’m flattered, but I’m not single. I’m married to a Pathos. Patrick: Oh. You go. Interspecies plant marriages are always the best way to produce new thriving offspring. Lucky woman, or man? Paramedic Paul: We don’t do gender assignment they/them is fine by us. Patrick: Hey Patty here that. Patty: Yes Patrick. We all know. You’re the last hold out in the plant world who hasn’t heard. Patrick: She’s always been jealous of my long spines. Paramedic Paul: They are impressive. —— The End ——
