Is everything okay here? I’m always posting about this plant because he’s so interesting, and I’m not really sure what he is lol. I cut off the top a couple of months ago because it was getting leggy due to being in a different location under a grow light. For the past couple months, he’s been growing from the top into what looks like little plants, while sitting in my north facing window. I’m not sure what to do with the new growth and the dying leaves at the bottom. Someone told me I should leave the dying leaves alone, but I’m not too sure if that’ll leave room for pests to take over. With the new growths (4 new heads and 1 little head) should I just let them grow and leave them alone, or would it be possible to cut them off and plant them around the main plant?

Definitely a sempervivum! I think what happened is that it is both growing baby plants to replace the top you chopped off AND it’s usual pups around it. That’s why they are called hens and chicks, it grows a ring of babies hanging off cords around it. I believe you could bend those stems down and attach them to the ground so the babies can form roots before you cut them. You could pin them down with a hair pin close to the rosettes on top. Once they have roots, you could chop and bury that cord. As for the rest of the leaves on the plant, I think those new babies on top are your new plant. I would suggest you take the bottom leaves off (it’s almost used them all up anyway) and plant it deeper. That would have actually been my suggestion before you chopped the top off as well. For the future, sempervivum respond well to removing lower leaves to help it lay flat and burying that part under the leaves deeper. That will become part of the root system and it will grow root hairs from that whole stem that is under the dirt. For now, you will end up with a multi-head main plant and several single ones around it when those root. I think it will look cool!

It also kind of looks like another baby is hiding under the old leaves.

Ahhh thank you for clearing that up! I’ll take the dead leaves out then. I’m not really following with what you’re saying though, in terms of the ring of babies and bending them down into the dirt 🤔

Not my picture, but copied from a planta page. It naturally grows baby plants around it like this. They grow in a full circle around it, which is why I called it a ring. Sorry that wasn’t very clear.😅 They will root if they touch dirt. Since yours are growing upwards (maybe stretching for light) instead of out, I was suggesting you use a hair pin to hold them down on the soil to root. Let the cords stick up like an inch worm and make the little rosettes touch the dirt.

Once they root, you can cut the cord from the plant and bury it under the rooted baby plant.

Hi! So are you saying I Should tuck in the new growths under the soil kind of like I’ve shown here?

I think your plant might need more light too.
