So I recently discovered that my elephant bush and ghost plants had grown some mold on the tops of their soil. I decided to get rid of half the soil and replace it for my elephant bush and just completely replace the soil for my ghost plant since it’s pretty small. I thought I was watering them when they were completely dry but they were still pretty damp at the bottom of their pots so that kinda sucks. Other than that they look ok and I’m letting them dry out for as long as possible. I’m keeping an eye on my other succulents just in case but the others are fairly new and have only been watered maybe a couple of times. Decided to get a moisture meter to prevent this from happening again. Any other advice for my plants?

Do you bottom water your plants and water them from the top of the soil and let the water drain from the bottom?

I water from the top and make sure I have the drainage open for a few days

I’ve found bottom watering helps keep my succulents from getting overwatered or attracting fungus gnats. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s very easy, and tutorials in the search section of the app here if you browse for a bit, but if you can’t find it, I’m sure you can find a tutorial on YouTube. It’s pretty simple and once you do it a couple of times you’ll figure out just how much water each of your plants actually want to absorb during waterings. Just water from the top every once in a while to prevent a buildup or salt and other minerals. Hope this helps!

My advice would be to put a fan near it, switch to a chunkier soil, put it in an inner plastic pot, or switch to terracotta. I have had a hard time with succulents in glazed ceramic indoors. I can get away with it outside in the Texas heat, but everything in them indoors got root rot. I would strongly suggest you switching to terracotta. The next best thing would be putting the plant in an inner plastic pot so it can get a little more airflow. Also make sure the pot isn’t bigger than it’s roots so it can suck up all the water within a day. You could also blow a fan to dry out the dirt better and add some pumice, perlite, and orchid bark to make the soil chunkier. Also a note about watering. Although you don’t want to water until the soil is dry, you still shouldn’t water until the bottom leaves show they need water. So you would look for more pliable lower leaves. Succulents store water in their leaves so they don’t need to store it in their soil. They want to live in a dry soil until they need water again.
