Hi everyone! I got this Echeveria as a gift maybe 3 years ago (it was one of the tiny ones in a cute pots from some sort of supermarket). It keeps growing and stretching and to be honest until now, I kinda did not think anything of it. But they are too heavy now and keep feeding off the bottom leaves. I would like to repot it, but how do i go about? Can I only reuse the top part after i cut it apart? Or are there other ways to reuse the stalk? I know the leaves can grow into a new plant - it happened naturally when a few of them fell into the soil. Thanks for any advice!

    I’m no expert but I’ve tried a few times to varying degrees of success. If you cut the top part off you can replant and then the leaves if you leave to dry out they will grow roots and you can replant them. Mine has been needing repotting for a while as well 😅

    I believe this is a sedeveria not an echeveria. Similar care but different growth patterns. I’m not positive about the id but going by leaf shape and its trailing habit. Should be easy to prop. Cut the rosette off leaving enough stem to stick into the soil. Remove the bottom leaves. Allow to callous over for a day or so, although I never do. Plant into good quality cactus soil. Do not water for a few days. After about 5 days, or if the leaves begin to wrinkle, squirt some water into the soil at the stem. Do not water the entire pot, just the stem area. Water every few days or if it looks dehydrated. In about two weeks there should be roots. You can test by very very gently pulling up on the plant. After the plant has enough roots you can start watering more on its regular succulent watering schedule. This plant needs very bright light, pot with drainage, and good succulent/cactus soil. And proper watering—only when the soil is bone dry. Sedeveria are trailers. They will grow straight up but will eventually lean over. This is normal growth pattern. You can prop the leaves but that is slow. I rarely do it.

    Thank you for posting and thank you for the helpful responses. It’s really important to know what type of succulent you have to give the best care. I am still learning and finding it challenging. @phil where did you learn how to identify. I have tried that approach and I find it overwhelming. Any advice and suggestions are helpful.

      I have learned some of the difference just thru having them. I have over 150 succulents so I’ve seen quite a few, but figuring out what they are is often difficult because many are so similar. And I sometimes not correct with my id.
