I’m very new to plants and picked this up at Lowe’s about 2 months ago. I’m not even sure what kind of cactus it is I just thought it was cute. It started getting little puff balls on it and now this green part is coming out. Is that going to be a flower? I have no idea what is happening with this 🤣

My best guess (not really an educated guess) is an old flower?

Hmm. It may be the start of new needles?

The spike growing out the left side is a flower spike. I’m not sure about the fluffy grey stuff!

Just the beginning of the flower. This plant is happy as a clam!

The spike started as a fluffy spot then turned into that. So idk if the other fluffy spots will do the same. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The cactus with the purple flower looks like it’s been planted too low in its pot (given the white line forming at the bottom rim of it) or it’s gotten too big for it’s pot. I’d really suggest planting that one in a bigger pot and making sure the base that’s white is given more space. I’ve read that can lead to root rot with cacti and is a common mistake made at Lowe’s and Home Depot with their succulents

I’d also suggest isolating them and checking them all for any root rot (dark and/or mushy roots. They should be light and firm if the roots are healthy) as well as any bugs. New plants can often come with a couple bugs or two from box stores like Lowe’s, Walmart, and Home Depot because they’re often placed near the doors to the outdoor part of the gardening center and aren’t often inspected for pests. Definitely suggest keeping them away from any older plants you already have until you can make sure they didn’t come with any pests

Oh thank you so much. I didn’t realize this. It’s the pot it came in and hasn’t grown yet so they just had it in the wrong size I guess.

This is a domino cactus & it’s looking very happy! The purple flower is fake and glued on. The fuzzy stuff are flowers :)

I was about to suggest it might be fake! Yeah! Definitely agree with eatyacarbs here. Lowe’s and Home Depot are kinda infamous for being really terrible with their plants. They might look alright for the time being but they’re often planted way too low and very often have at least one bug or pest crawling around. This is kinda just a general PSA to to kinda avoid Home Depot/Lowe’s/Walmart if you can. I’ve had good luck with buying plants online from Etsy and from a local nursery. It’s also a lot easier to ask the staff or an online seller questions than someone who works at a box store

No problem! I got a jade from there once that came with fungus gnats before I knew to avoid such stores and I didn’t know to isolate it. The fungus gnats got out and infested my terrarium for my pet garden snails and my poor snail Onion was so freaked out and was trying to escape cause all these fungus gnats started crawling out of the dirt like something out of a zombie movie. Definitely wouldn’t wanna see anyone go through the same thing or risk infecting any plants they already have.

And as a tip (I also noticed the jade on the left in the photo) jades and most succulents like being in bright spots. I keep mine on windowsills. Jades in particular really thrive with neglect and often times less watering does a lot more for them as long as they’re in a spot with enough sunlight. Make sure the soil is bone dry if you want to water it. You can test it by trying to stick a toothpick or wooden skewer in to see if the dirt is moist and sticks to it. If nothing comes out or it’s difficult to even stick it in there, it’s likely dry. This might sound nuts but I only water my jade about 5 times a year and he’s 30 years old now. Does better when I don’t water him. If you have to repot them or buy new soil (which I really suggest with the two cacti and you should definitely do if there’s pests or root rot), look for a specifically cacti/succulent soil mix, especially one that comes with perlite. Perlite helps better ensure that you don’t overwater it and helps the water drain all the way through to the roots. It’s also really important to make sure the water drains from the pot completely to avoid root rot.

If you’re scared of overwatering it or it’s difficult to do so for the cacti, I suggest bottom watering it. There’s lots of articles online that explain how to do so really easily, but essentially you fill a saucer with water that you put the pot on top of so the water is absorbed from the bottom of the pot instead of from the top. Let it sit for at least an hour and if it’s stopped drinking up the water, take it from the saucer, let the pot drain, gently try the bottom just so you’re not getting wherever you put the pot wet, and let it dry. Hope this helps!

That’s exactly what I have been doing because I couldn’t water the soil since the plant takes up the whole thing.

That’s great! That’s probably why the cacti have survived this long despite being potted too low! If it seems to be liking where you’ve been placing it in terms of light, and you don’t see any pest or root issues, it looks like as long as you give the cacti some bigger pots and some extra soil so they aren’t potted so low, all your new plants should do just fine!

Domino cactus! The fluffy bunny tails are flowers! The purple thing on top is just glued on and I would remove it.

I did know it was just glued on top but didn’t know it would get actual flowers on it. 🥰

Kinda ironic that they felt the need to literally GLUE a fake flower on a cacti that flowers 😂

No problem! Best of luck! It really upsets me how often those plants aren’t cared for in box stores, since those are the places most people that don’t have nurseries or local greenhouses can buy plants from. Yours looks like they’re doing great though.
