Can anyone identify this plant? I was given it as a gift and there was nothing identifying it. Planta is telling me it’s a jade but I know that it is not. Reminds me of Portulaca or something similar.

The site isn’t working for me right now, but browse the Aptenia genus on Lifle dot com. I’m thinking it might be in there.

Jade plants (Crassula Ovata) have the larger elongated leaves. This could be one of the 200+ species under the genus Crassula. I don’t know which one. Portulaca plants like Elephant Bush (Portulaca Afra) tend to have smaller leaves like my elephant bush in the photo. The leaves are about 1/4” in diameter. The pot is 12 inches.

There are so many versions of “two leaves grow horizontally, split, now vertical, repeat” in that part of the world/brewing in greenhouses. I got really excited about that symmetry after walking through a local nursery that stocked 80 types of “Ice Plants” (Delosperma) one summer. It’s like “oh that one happened because a bat dropped some seeds of THIS one near ocean air.” Sorry to hijack this with my weirdness.

I had no idea ice plants had so many varieties. I believe the part about new plant discovery in droppings. I have mulberry trees popping up in my yard and garden beds from birds and squirrels. None of my neighbors have a mulberry tree. 😄

I find it weird, still, that various Ice Plants are being sold here as ground cover. I saw some - and a big agave - in a yard last October. It's all gone lol. There might be a chance if Northern Utah didn't have a November through March.

Giant agaves used to be the norm front garden plant on the Texas gulf coast. Never saw snow. Christmas in shorts back many many years ago. Now, yearly snowfall has killed all of them. The last winter was ridiculous. My weeds did very well. Survived and thrived. These ice plants would not last the summers since 100°F for several weeks is the norm. 😀
