Any peanut cactus parents out there? I have a question. This is Bean. They're 5. Up until now Bean has been growing pretty steadily, but no real growth in the past year. What Bean has done is become DENSE. So my question is this: should I be "pruning" Bean? Thin out some of the dense growth of little nugs? It occurred to me that since I prune my other plants maybe I should do something like that here? Am I nuts?

Have you recently changed its spot where it might be getting less light now? If not, it might just need some fertilizer to get back into growing some new leaves. I use Osmocote’s Slow-Release Fertilizer Pellets and add them to the top of the soil or add them to my soil mix when I repot my plants. That way they consistently get watered and release fertilizer into the soil without needing to stick to a strict schedule. Hope this helps!

Btw this is unrelelated, but the dog in your profile photo is adorable! I’ve recently inherited a shih tzu and she’s been a very welcome addition to my family 😊

You know it's lighting did change lately. Its location didn't, just the lights, so I didn't think of that. I'm gonna move Bean, this is a good idea.

You shouldn't need to trim it, unless you wanted to put some baby beans in new pots.

Cacti don't necessarily need pruning like other house plants do. It's stunted growth is most likely just a nutrient or light deficiency and the cactus is dormant. Make sure your providing proper lighting (cacti perfer full sun) and start fertilizing with a cactus specific fertilizer every other watering during the growing season. I use Espoma Organic Cactus & Succulent plant Food. It's a 1-2-2 formula.

I actually just switched to that fertilizer! I'm going to relocate them to outside I think - that's historically made it happy.

All mine go outside in the summer too. Putting it back out should definitely help. It'll be a wake me up especially with the heat. I love peanut cacti, I've always considered adding one to my small collection. I really enjoy cluster cacti even though I don't own any.
