This is my variegated Jade plant. I’m wondering what I can do to make it look better and grow fuller? Any thoughts as to where I should make some cuts? Thanks!

Repot in a somewhat bigger pot with some liquid succulent fertilizer and some good aerated soil

Cut between the “notches” on the stems. Those are the nodes necessary for propagation. I marked where you can make the cuts in red. If you really want to make it bushier, you’re gonna want to go for some pretty heavy pruning, but you can propagate the cuttings and allow them to form roots so they can either form their own pot full of pieces of this jade or eventually be added back to the base of the plant to make your jade even bushier over time. It’ll take a few months for all the cut branches to form new growth, but making those cuts will allow the plant to focus its energy towards developing new growth rather than using it on existing foliage. Use clean shears or clean some shears with some hydrogen peroxide to make the cuts, allow the cuttings to callous for a few hours or a day, then you can dip them in Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder to speed up the root development process, or simply add them to a recently watered pot full of fresh cactus soil mix. You could try water propagations too, but I’ve found soil propagations have worked the best with my jades. Hope this helps! 😊

Thank you so much! This is the help I was looking for. This little guy has struggled for years and it actually looks the best it ever has now, but I knew with some proper cuts it might turn into something bushier. Appreciate you taking the time to mark the cuts.

No problem! I’ve got a 30-year-old jade and I know it was a little scary to give it the first haircut, but it was a lot happier once I did. Jades can last a very long time with proper care and a little pruning from time to time 😉
