I have a new-to-me jade plant that seems to have new growth, but has very floppy and almost squishy leaves. I am worried that it is not doing well but this is my first so I’m not sure what the problem is if there is one. I’m grateful for any advice!

I’d definitely give the roots a check if it’s decided to lean completely over the side and the leaves are soft and squishy. If you find signs of rot (roots that peel away from the touch, roots that are dark and mushy), then come back at add that in the comments here, and I’d be happy to walk you through how to treat it. If the roots are healthy, lemme know and I’ll help you troubleshoot what could be causing the problem. My best bet would be that either the soil isn’t well-draining enough for the jade or the jade has been overwatered, causing the drooping. Hope this helps.

I just repotted it last week because I thought that might be the problem (plastic to terracotta pot with drainage holes) and it must be a cutting (I got it at a community garden sale last month) because there aren’t any roots, other than those tiny ones? in the top of the picture.

Got it. So do you know what brand or type of soil you used when you repotted? If it was miracle grow brand, it might be that the poor quality of the soil is affecting the plant, especially if it doesn’t have roots yet. Did you get to check the base of the plant for any signs of distress?

If the jades are cuttings without roots at the moment, I would take the cuttings out, check for any signs of distress (if there’s any black or rot on it, lemme know and I’ll tell you how to treat that first), and if the ends look good, spray them with peroxide, let them sit for a minute, gently pat it dry with a paper towel, then get some Bonide’s Rooting Hormone Powder and dip the ends it in. Don’t be scared to put a liberal amount on it, and on any “notches/lines” going up the stem. Those are nodes that roots can develop out of. The rooting powder will speed up the rooting process of your cuttings. If it is currently in a miracle grow soil, I would repot it in a fresh mix of another brand of cactus and succulent mix. I swear by Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent mix for my jades, but pretty much any other brand than Miracle Grow that has a cactus/succulent mix should work.

I was able to get to your instructions today and it didn’t look like there were any rotten bits so I did the peroxide and rooting powder and there were some tiny roots starting to grow so hopefully this will speed things up a little bit. Thank you so much for your response! 🤞🏻
