Hi everyone! I’ve had my jade plant for over 4 months now, but I am having trouble figuring out when I should water it. I’m aware that they are resilient plants but I want to do my best to take care of it. At the moment some leaves look like they’re ready for water while others still seem plump. Yet I’ve found a couple of leaves at the base of the plant that are wrinkly/mushy and also light green colour. I’ve attached a few photos to get a better idea, as well as a photo of where I typically have it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I find Planta suggested water routine just fine. Presuming you have the correct information in as far as your pot, soil, location, etc..

Yes, assuming you have the proper soil mix, I would go by the feel of the soil, and the weight of the pot rather than the look of the leaves. By the time the leaves are showing signs of shrivil you've really waited too long. What are your plants until water runs out of the bottom and then maybe water it again, let it drain and then lift the pot making note of how heavy it feels. Then use combination of lifting the pot and feeling the soil to determine if it's time to water. As you probably know they like it quite dry but you don't want the leaves to start shriveling.

Thank you! I was using a mix of tropical soil and perlite but switched it for cactus/succulent soil and so far so good!

I second your problems 🤪 I have one larger jade I really struggled with at first. I find that it does much better if I don’t water until it shows me signs (wrinkled leaves). They can store so much water in the stems and leaves making it super easy to over water them. Mine is in a south facing window (I live in pnw so winter is gloomy). I’m watering maybe once every 4-6 weeks. When it goes outside in the summer maybe twice or three times a week. From the pics I wouldn’t water it. It’s quite normal for jade to shed lower leaves since they kinda grow into trees. yellowing and wrinkly leaves at the base can also be a sign of overwatering though!

Ohhhh okay good to know! I had changed the soil just to be safe. How do you know if your jade experienced root rot? The roots are so fine compared to Monstera roots so I’m having trouble determining.

It’s really hard to know without pulling it out and looking. If you pull at the roots the rotted ones should detach easily, some may feel super mushy, or they turn like black, it may also start to stink.

The little brown pock marks on the leaves are a sign of edema- overwatering. I use the app and the pinch test for when to water (pinch and if it feels firm and plump, leave it alone).

Thank you! I was bottom watering it but I may have used too much.
