I know the African Milk Tree isn’t technically a cactus, but i’m hoping to still get some help here. I got this on sale and Greg (the website) told me low humidity and low water need. So I thought ā€œgreat! maybe I can keep a cactus aliveā€ Now I’m overthinking. When I got him his soil was bone dry, I kept him in relatively the same soil after I checked on the roots and repotted. I think it’s some kind of seed starter mix but I’m not totally sure. He is under a grow light with moderate intensity for 12 hours a day now. Basically what I’m asking is should I water him?? And any other tips are appreciated! I’m so paranoid when it comes to cacti and succulents because I always think they need water when I know they hold it within themselves.

I honestly don’t have a solid watering schedule for mine. I water mine whenever Planta tells me to

I don’t know when the last time they watered it was. The soil was super super dry.

If the soil was that dry, I’d water him! It’ll also help you get an idea for the type of soil he’s in and how quickly it drains

Ypu can check when you last watered in the app. Go to the plant and scroll down to history.

Oh gotcha, but you repotted it. Id kinda just go off when you got it. When you buy cacti/succulents from the store, often they are under watered. Unless its wet, I always water the day I get them.

Do you live in a dry area? If not you may want to remove him outta starter mix, it's usually peat heavy. And if it's humidity at all where ypu are, it can cause the plant to stay damp much longer than it should. Because it's made to hold moisture really well.

Seed starter mix would not be appropriate for that plant. If it is in fact seed starter I would change the soil to a cactus mix. Seed starter is usually a very fine lightweight mixture of vermiculite and perlite. Cactus mix is chunky with bark and rocks and sand and maybe a little soil.

I like Bonsai Jack gritty mix for all my succulents and cacti because it gets really humid here. As for when to water pick up the pot and if it’s got any weight No water, you’ll get good at and know when by the feel of how light it is. If you want more proof then give it a little squeeze like you do when checking a banana and you’ll feel it getting a little soft. They need to use up some stored water or next time they will split and rot. Hope this helps you ease some anxiety and trust your instincts
