Looking for advice! Hello, I was wondering first off if anyone knows what this cactus is? I found it in Utah while camping near Zion National park. It was in poor condition and I wanted to save it. It’s been here in the Portland area since April 2024 and has had so much new growth! (All that lighter green is new) It’s gotten so big I don’t know what to do with it. Since I’m not familiar with this species I’m reaching out before I do anything to it

I wouldn’t recommend taking a plant from its natural environment. But, it’s already done. It’s an opuntia (prickly pear cactus). It looks like it needs more light. The climate and light should emulate its natural environment or it will become etiolated. It needs cactus potting soil that is fast draining and quickly dries. The current soil looks a bit like clay. 🍀🪴

It’s with its original soil. It’s sandy for sure, just not sure what it is exactly. I can definitely try putting it in more light, it was in a shady spot originally but I’ll look into the species! Thanks for the ID.

It needs direct sunlight, those slender shoots of new growth is the plant looking for light, id recommend cutting them off at the segments, you can repot them if u like but they wont ever get much wider
