Is it normal for an aloe vera to have a very small root system?

Most succulents and cacti tend to grow shallower roots than most plants. Sometimes it really doesn’t look like there’s enough roots for the size of plant!

Ok thanks. Mine recently fell out of the pot when I was moving it to water it. It had gotten big enough that it kinda flopped over and the roots were only and inch or inch and a half long so they weren't really enough to keep it in the pot. I repotted it and buried the stem deeper since there were no leaves at the bottom anymore anyways. So hopefully that will keep it from taking another tumble.

That’s perfect! She’ll root further up the stem eventually! Before I chopped my aloe last spring I did have to stake it since it was getting pretty top heavy. If you put some skewers into the soil around the stem that can help until she roots up the stem

Were there a bunch of broken roots further in the soil or just the short guys?

I didn't really check it out but I think I would have noticed if there were a lot

Also a couple more questions. How often do u water/do u water as soon as its completely dry or do u wait a while still after it dries out? And how often do u fertilize? I've read before to only fertilize once a year but is that for real?

I fertilize with a very diluted fertilizer probably once a month but you don’t need to do it that often! My cacti are under a grow light so I water probsbly more often than recommended. I try to wait until the soil is bone dry and then give it a few extra days to a week before watering, since I tend to overwater.

Ok I've just been doing whenever planta says but I think I'll start trying to figure out a custom schedule. And pry fertilize a little more often. Thanks for all your help!
