   It seems like you might have used regular potting soil, which can retain too much moisture. Cacti thrive in dry environments, often going weeks without water before experiencing heavy rain. Overwatering can lead to rot. If you have a needle, gently poke the cactus with the back of it, where the needle easily goes through is rotted. If not, give the pot a gentle shake to see if it jiggles. If the cactus is already rotting, remove the affected part. Then, use cactus and succulent soil, place the healthy top on the soil, and it should start to root. Also, if your plant is in a drip tray, remember to empty the extra water after watering. This helps prevent the plant from absorbing water from the bottom of the pot, which could lead to too much moisture. Best of luck! If you have any questions just respond to this

     Thank you, but no it's cactus soil. It wasn't overwatered, I think it may have been underwatered. When Planta told me to water it it was bone dry and that's when I noticed it had shrunk.

     That can happen if a yellow ball cactus goes too long without water. Even though cacti like to fully dry out between waterings, they still need some water, and if they stay dry for too long they can shrivel as they use up their stored moisture. The soil should dry out completely, but it shouldn’t stay moist all the time either. If the cactus feels firm and not mushy, it’s likely just thirsty and should plump back up after a good watering with proper drainage. That can also happen if the soil isn’t as well-draining as it needs to be. Even if it’s labeled cactus/succulent soil, some mixes look more like regular houseplant soil with extra perlite and can still be pretty dense, especially if they stay dark and wet after watering. Cacti need soil that dries out quickly and doesn’t stay moist for long, otherwise roots can struggle and the plant can shrivel or stress. This is one of my cacti that is in a succulent soil mix that’s super well draining and doesn’t hold moisture for too long.

   Most commercial cactus/succulent soils are still waaay too dense for cacti and most succulents. Cacti especially like mostly an inorganic substrate. I mix my own with 70% bonsai rocks and 30% cactus soil. This is what you want it to look like when mixed. If you don't want to mix your own, look for "Bonsai Jack's Gritty Mix" ... it's on Amazon and a little pricey, but simply put cacti and succulents will 100% die if their substrate retains too much water & takes too long to dry out. To me, it's worth the cost for happy plants! I promise, your cacti will thank you! The soil in the pictures you provided looks like it takes days to dry out

   Thanks everyone. It just went into the trash. It wasn't getting better. I'm guessing it dried out. It was in cactus soil and not overwatered. Roots looked fine though. Very weird.
