Big update! Before I thought this cactus might be coming to an end do to its 35+ year age and lack of sunlight. After repotting investing in a grow/sun light I have found some new growth !!! (Plate is there to help grow the cactus more upright) however, I’m not sure if this is a new paddle or flower, anyone know? Here is a picture of the beautiful prickly pear šŸŒµšŸ„¹ā£ļø

I had the same question when a creepy green shape started to emerge.

Hello, Dave šŸ‘‹ completely unrelated to the original post, my apologies. I have a question about cacti, and you seem like the guy who’d know. I was wondering if cacti have rhizomes? Or something similar? Yesterday I was experimenting with a cactus in my backyard, trying to see if it would live if I pot it up and bring it inside. Well, while I was digging, I found a peculiar looking sack of some sort, it felt very mushy and maybe rotted, at first I thought that it was part of an onion. I tossed that aside, and kept digging. When I did get the cactus out it had a ā€œsackā€ just the same. I potted the cactus along with the sack, and I grabbed another one which was ā€œsacklessā€. My question is, what is this sack? My only guess is that it holds water? I’m not sure what type of cactus it is, I am not a cactus or succulent expert by any means, I can never keep a succulent alive, I honestly do not expect much from this guy, except maybe go learn a thing or two and be able to try again (successfully?!) in the future. here is a picture of it. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the ā€œsackā€ in question.

I read this yesterday morning, looked up a bit, thought about saying ā€œSucs do have Rhizomesā€ but the ā€œsackā€ threw me off. Yes, they do have rhizomes, but I’m thinking the ā€œsackā€ could be new cactus growth. This pic isn’t the best example, but the pups on this one start off looking like a dot of fuzzy, green mold. I was really concerned when I saw it on another plant of the same genus, but it takes shape over a few weeks. ps The cactus in your pic appears to be a Roadkill Cactus (Consolea rubescens).

Yeah, sure thing. I’m reading about rhizomes now, so thanks for asking. I have degrees in art music and goofing off, not horticulture or botany. These types of ā€œokay, now what?ā€ occur every quarter, and I’ve gone through ā€œwhy is this plant shrinking?ā€ and ā€œwhat’s this powdery stuff?ā€ I also got really confused over which way the roots want to go, as cactus use several types of root systems, and I assumed planting one way would mean, for example, they would use other root systems to accommodate being in tight quarters. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Isn’t nature great 😌, my peanut cacti is badly corked and has decided to squeeze some pups out.
