Hiā€”this isnā€™t a succulent post per se, but I didnā€™t know where else to ask this: my money trees leaves are looking very dry. I recently got a grow light for it and was wondering if this is leaf burn? I know itā€™s supposed to be part sun/part shade, and am worried that my lighting setup is wrong for this plant(image included). Itā€™s a SANSI full spectrum 10W clip light (i donā€™t remember the light temp). Iā€™ve seen some people suggest that to not get full ā€œsunā€ exposure you can point the light at another surface and have the light reflect; I would probably do this with my ceiling but I feel like itā€™s too dimā€”can I get some advice?

    Iā€™m thinking this could definitely be leaf burn or leaf scorching. Rule of thumb for grow lights is to have them 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) away from the tops of plants. Also, donā€™t overlap light coverage (I.E have it near a window and have the grow light). Otherwise the other potential issue could be a lack of water or drainage. Iā€™d suggest if you want to cover all bases get a soil moisture meter, itā€™s super helpful to make sure you donā€™t over or under water. Above is another example of leaf scorching

      Hi! Just to add some extra infoā€” I know thereā€™s a window behind it but itā€™s north facing so only things in the window do kind of wellā€”my plant was in really bad condition sitting where it currently is before I got the grow light because there was not enough light coming in

    It doesnā€™t look like a burn from the lamp. It looks like a low humidity or a watering issue. I looked at the growth progress in your photos to find the pot may be too big. Your plant looked healthy when the pot was half full with soil. It progressively got worse as soil was doubled. This buried half of the trunk under the soil which explains the short trunk for such a big tree. More importantly it added excess soil that holds excess water the plant must use up between watering or it can get root rot. The stones on top of the soil prevents the soil from quickly drying out making it worse. I recommend significantly reducing the pot size. There should be 1ā€ or less between the root ball and the pot. Remove the stones to let evaporation help the soil dry out. Add a humidifier.šŸŖ“šŸ€

      Hi! I added the extra soil because my cat was digging it up and ripping out my money tree and the rocks were setup to help with little gnat-type bugs that liked the moisture in the soil(that also attracted my cat to attack the plantšŸ„²). Just some extra background as to why those changes were made. Iā€™ll consider getting a smaller pot like you suggested. I know the rock setup works well because Iā€™ve used before on another money tree that loves it and is in a much drier climate than mine. I donā€™t know about getting a humidifier because Iā€™m currently living in Oregon where I learned thereā€™s a big mold issue because of excess moisture and poor ventilation; I could get a humidifier but then Iā€™d have to keep my windows open which would negate the humidifieršŸ˜…. I do most her frequently to make up for the low humidity though, so I hope thatā€™s helps somewhat?

      Use Mosquito Bits or BMI liquid with every watering to get rid of fungus gnats. Both have the beneficial bacteria BTi that kills the larvae in the soil. Instructions are on the label. They are not harmful to humans and pets. But, read the label cautions. Get a small humidifier just for the plants. Put the plants in a group and run the humidifier near it. Most of the small humidifiers will not increase the relative humidity of the entire house just the humidity near the unit. Place the unit next to the plans. I live in south Texas where you can cut humidity in summer. We donā€™t open windows at all. Too hot, too humid. We only get mold if there is an old water leak. Not because of higher humidity in the house. šŸ˜„ We do run fans for air circulation. I run my ceiling fans 24 hours a day. The pet stores have a bitter tasting spray to prevent pets from destroying things or chewing things. It kept my pups from chewing furniture/window sills. It might keep your cat from touching the plants. šŸŖ“ šŸ€

      The best way Iā€™ve found to reduce gnats is to water from the bottom, as they love damp soil. Even though my biggest money tree is nearly 5 feet high I carry it into the bathroom and put it in the sink, leave it for half an hour to soak up what water it wants, and only rarely (1 out of 10 times) water over the top to flush it through. It seems very happy with that. When it gets bigger I might not be able to lift it into the sink, but Iā€™ll put it in a saucer or something šŸ˜„

    My money plant was looking pretty sad last year and so what I ended up doing was I pulled it out of the dirt? I trimmed her roots just a little bit and then I put her back into fresh soil in a different pot and just bathed it and sheā€™s come back full force.

    I agree with Sunny, it doesnā€™t look like leaf burn. If you donā€™t think itā€™s a humidity issue, it could be overwatering. I donā€™t think itā€™s the Sansi light either. I have a bunch of them and they are all closer than yours. And on 12 hours a day. Yours is 10 watt, I have some 42 watts. My best suggestion is check root health. If thatā€™s okay, then rethink your watering routine.

    I also understand money panel ants. Donā€™t like to be a plant all by themselves. They like to be next to other plants.

      Interesting! I hadnā€™t heard that before. I have other plants in the room, but how close would you say they should be to other plants to be happy?

    Mine looked like this when it wasn't on a good watering schedule. I think it's just dry. I also didn't have to use a grow light, it's a pretty tolerant plant in my opinion. I have sheers and just put mine near the window.

      Yeah, I definitely feel like itā€™s probably dry and not overwatered like other users suggested because the leaves feel crispy whereas Iā€™ve heard overwatering leads to the leaves feeling soggier. I got a watering globe for it because it seemed like the soil would always be dry by the 2nd day after Iā€™d water it, so I was hoping that the globe could provide a more steady flow of water. Iā€™m going to try redirecting the grow light so it gets more indirect light and also give it a good healthy drink and monitor the soil moisture.
