My largest cactus got entirely too big for his pot and also started rotting because the center trapped water. So after propagation i have 5 (plus a sixth I cut off last year from a branch that hung far out of the pot). Now i just need to find people to gift all my extra cacti to

I didn’t know you could propagate cacti. How does one go about this?! They looked amazing.

With tall barrel-like cacti, you ideally let it dry out (mine needed to skip that because of the rot). Then you chop it straight across, as low as is convenient (i'm sure there's more than one way to go about it, but i used a saw as these are like 3+ inches in diameter.) Then you lay the cuttings down on their sides (i set them on a plate) and let the wound callous over. time for that varies based on conditions. These took a day in a very hot greenhouse, but it can take a week or more. Then you pot it, burying about 1/3 of the cactus or as much as fits comfortably in the pot. Use cactus soil and water it when you pot it to encourage rooting. You'll also want gloves, obviously. And sometimes they kind of start the process for you by sealing off a section. I just buried those without cutting them
