Plant Lives MatterWell…maybe? But probably not. Gymnocalycium mihanovichii has been bred so that they often don’t produce their own chlorophyll. This is why they are grafted onto another green cactus which does produce chlorophyll. Eventually, these guys will just die because they can’t make their own food from sunlight. They do look pretty on their own, but unless they are grafted onto something else, they likely won’t survive.

Darn! I wasn't sure. They'd be cute little guys if they could survive on their own.

Yeah! They will probably grow roots if you want to put them in soil. At least they’ll be cute while they last 😊

If you want to try grafting them onto a new root stock, they're known to be compatible with dragonfruit (what they're most often sold with) and fairy castle cactus. Ideally you want to put them on only some of the branches of a cactus with branches, so the green host of the graft still has places to grow

I grafted mine onto a dragonfruit cactus. Hoping for the best!
