What would you say are the key ingredients to a good succulent soil?… | The Cactus & Succulent Circle | Planta-community

What would you say are the key ingredients to a good succulent soil? I’m on a pretty tight budget and I’m honestly considering buying a high quality, premixed soil because getting all these components in the long run will cost me more. So, I’m not sure what to do!

It’ll be cheaper to buy miracle gro cactus/succulent soil and a bag of perlite and mix them in a 1:1 ratio. This is maybe $20 total for soil that will last you a long time.

Definitely cheaper to just buy the mix if you only need a small amount. The ONLY way soil is cheaper is if you make it in bulk.

100% just buy a succulent mix. Or if you already have a potting soil you like on hand grab a bag of perlite (super cheap) and add some for extra drainage and you’ll be good to go! I wouldn’t add perlite to a succulent premix though, you risk overdoing it then your plants won’t get the right nutrients as the water may run though TOO quick (especially 1:1 perlite to succ mix)

This is basically what I’ve been doing so far! Taking a potting soil that I like, and adding a nice amount of perlite. I recently dove headfirst into succulents, so I just worry about their roots a little. Haha and seeing others have succulents in a gorgeous, chunky mix and thriving has me inspired to potentially upgrade my little dudes. All their root systems are pretty small, so I don’t think it would take too much. Thinking about it now, I could literally just measure out the exact amount of soil I’d need right now. ETA: I do let all my succulents dry out completely, and let them stay dry for a bit.
