This plant looks like someone starved a Mammillaria and then cast a spell to reanimate only the bones. From llifle: “Leuchtenbergia is a monotypic genus (having only a single species). However, despite its very different appearance it is closely related to Ferocactus and hybrids have been created between these two genera. This hybrid is known with the name Ferobergia.” I’m waiting a bit to add “var. thachythele,” but a really cool, discounted, rare supermarket find, nonetheless.

It stands out even in a row of other oddballs. It looks like someone I would rather meet during the day. Haha really, it looks like a plant I’m going to snag with my shirt, so he’s getting put somewhere safe.

My first thought was Fero but I knew it wasn’t. Haven’t seen one quite like this. Very cool!

I had to crawl over to Facebook for the final ID lol. I kept thinking, “I know you…” but got lost reading about agave. One person in the thread showed me this thing, which is just too ridiculous.

Haha watch out for the rabbit hole. Come to think of it, now that you mention agave, I have seen your little guy on YouTube- ‘Cactusjoe’ his Youtube shorts. I like this one too, converts to $130USD? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Holy wow! Yeah, it’s one that I remember seeing in pics a while back, but didn’t think to ask or read further - probably because it looks like a weed + that genus name does not stick in my head. But, it looks…special? Like it has mystical secrets about life or something ha. It’s also one where I say, “This is alive?”

For sure I get that. At first glance it might be, meh. But then something is tugging at you. I felt that way when I picked this guy up. This is Trichodiadema densum.

I got this from the same place. It is legitimately the most backwards, most expensive market in a neighborhood of financial/racial diversity. They stock these types of frivolous, speciality things for an audience of no one - except me!

lol tell me about it. There’s a shop with cacti in the next city I like to visit. So overpriced and yet…. It’s pretty sparse over here

Two blocks away, this (super)market had around 50 versions of columnar arrangements for $10. I mostly resisted.

$10 not bad. That is cute. I have a bunch of little guys from last spring that need to be potted soon. I want to make an arrangement with them but I need to be inspired. Thanks for sharing!

I’m still holding steady with my decision lol. This is the ONLY “arrangement” I have. The planets watering schedules have to be identical or I walk. Jk
