I’m thinking of getting a Echeveria as my first serious attempt at keeping plants. Is there anything I should know before? Specific health issues to worry about, good fertilizers or soils to use?

Well i think do your research make sure you get a beginner freindley plant, cactus, succulent, ex. By doing research to find the best ones make sure it's pot iis big enough research how often to water ur plant and use ffertilifertilizer for the specific plant when you water it and also I suggest cutting or plucking off leaves that are brown and dead if your plant has leafs and use the right dirt (all info included can be found with some research)

Succulents are super easy just don’t over water them water them once a month or when the soil is completely dry they also like full sun or if you live in the woods like me you can get a cheap grow light they also like well draining soil so you can add extra perlite

Thanks! My last plant (a moon cactus) died of over or under watering. I had no idea what I was doing so… RIP

In general from my experience, if you can get an echiveria / graptopelatum hybrid [graptoverias] they tend to be much more forgiving and easier to propagate, and even a bit more immune to soil nematodes. I'd say pure echeverias are just a bit harder since the node spacing on the stem is very minimal which means it'll be hard to clean out mealy bugs or detect and fix stem rot [which is how I've lost most echeverias specifically]. My favorite echiveria related plant is the Graptoveria fantome! They've never had problems until I left them with my parents for college 🧍🏽‍♂️

Those are gorgeous. How big are they?

Whole hand across in diameter each! They're both grown from a really lucky leaf propagation. I think it took around 2/3 years to get to this size after i propped them.

For a beginner I recommend terracotta planters, high grit soil (Jacks Gritty Mix combined with regular houseplant soil 4 to 1), a name brand grow light (such as a Sansi clip on). Do not rely on standard cactus/succulent packaged soil-not enough grit. You will need brighter lights than you think. That’s why Sansi. That brand’s lights concentrate the light into a smaller area. Barrina, another good brand, has a wider light area. Do not water till soil is bone dry. The leaves should be slightly bendable and rubbery feeling. As far as using a moisture meter, they don’t work for high grit soil. Water until water is exiting the bottom drain hole. Then get rid of that water. First pic Echeveria Lola. Beautiful plant. Easy to find.

Echeveria powder puff. Second pic is echeverias, Haworthias, and Gasterias. Don’t limit your options . The last two require less light and are usually a little more forgiving. And look up Aeonium Kiwi. Easy rosette style succulent that is easy to grow. And one more is Echeveria Topsy Turvy. Very prolific if given proper conditions. It constantly has youngsters growing on the side. I have some tropical plants but mostly succulents. Over 100 currently.

I made the mistake of buying mine on Amazon but they came half dead they've really come around though the ones I have I recommend if you have to order them to do it off Etsy or a nursery

Feel free to take a look at my echeveria (aka Mexican snowball) named Mika in my Bedroom site through my profile! You’ll see how I completely neglected her to near death and now she’s thriving and flowering 🥲 this was a gift and one of my first real attempts at keeping plants too, and is probably the easiest of all the ones I have!! I couldn’t recommend more 😍
