    hihi! these cacti are not real. the red bit is a cactus that has been grafted onto a dragonfruit cactus, and does not produce energy and sucks energy from the dragonfruit instead. these cacti never live longer than a year or two when like this. if the cactus begins struggling and you can't find a reason why, the red cactus has probably grown too large and is killing the dragonfruit because they grow at different speeds. the red cactus needs to be cut off if you want to keep the dragonfruit long-term

      once it is cut off it will die, it has no chlorophyll and cannot sustain itself. you can wait to cut it off to enjoy the color for a while, just know that it will have to come off eventually if you want the dragonfruit to survive
