I was given this string of dolphins to look after for a bit by a family member. They bought it fully grown from a market and kept it outside for the three-ish months they had it. Never watered. There were clovers growing in it for a while and it was flowering when I got it. I’m not sure what to do now, I’ve been watering it once every 14 days and the top growths have opened up for more light while the bottom strings (and the strings directly near the soil) have shriveled up dolphins on them. The plant is in a chair right next to a window, but it will be higher up soon once I put my new plant stand together. The top is so thick I can’t get in there to wrap any vines around the soil to encourage fullness. I’ve trimmed a lot of the strings and new growths have started where I chopped, so what do I do? Should I buy a grow light for it? Chop a lot off? Leave it be? Increase watering?

I find with mine I follow the “squeeze test” and it works really well. Find the healthiest leaves and gently squeeze them, if they’re hard it doesn’t need water, if they’re soft they need water. If I’m suspicious then I’ll follow with a wooden skewer to make sure. My plant is 1/8 the size of yours and its crazy how much water it takes. I would say this needs waaay more water then it’s getting. I also always bottom water mine to make sure the soil never goes hydrophobic. I would start with checking the plant much more regularly with a wooden skewer and squeezing the healthy leaves. The lower leaves may need to be chopped, but I’d leave them for now and see if any plump back up.
