I had this plant and it didn’t get enough sun so it got long like this. I put it in better light and the base is doing better but the top is still thin and floppy. Can I cut the top off or do something to make it stronger?

So I think you can and should leave it till Spring depending on where you are living. I had the same problem so you should wait till it decides it’s ready to part with the mother plant. This first image was when I got something similar. Snow here became pot mates with T.C. after a ferocious lion decided to eat the previous pot mate.

The two got along well and the lion ignored them due to their prickly spikes.

Then one day my male DNA kicked in and said… “Hey John. Why don’t you plant those two tall cactus’s into that pot that’s narrow at the bottom and wider at the top. It’ll look real good on that tall wobbly pedestal table in front of the window too.” And so the two tall cactus plants went into the narrow pot on the wobbly table. (Table not shown here.)

Then one day, guess what happened. The wobbly table with the tower of cactus was bumped. <Wobble. Wobble.> My Male DNA: Oh no. I’ll catch it. My Male DNA: FUUUDDDGGE! My Male DNA: SON OF A $&@^%! And to the floor it crashed after my hands dropped it due to DNA stupidity. Snow with T.C. fell to the floor. Snow was in many pieces. T.C. still intact. And this is the happy family today in a normal pot on a stable surface. And the Male DNA in me has been told to shut up unless a jar needs to be opened or the trash taken out.

This was a very epic story.
