Does anybody have any good ideas on how to preserve plants in the winter? Specifically cacti and succulents. I’m also interested growing seeds right now, but perhaps this isn’t the best time?

Agreed! I recommend the Sansi grow bulbs on Amazon.

Define preserve. Does preserve mean “as is with continuing growth” or preserve mean “so it makes it to Spring”? Last fall I saw a guy in a Facebook forum post that he always just puts his cactus in the back of the basement till Spring. I said…Don’t they die without any light? He said …Naah. The go dormant. Dormant. Cactus go dormant in the winter. That’s why they don’t need watering in the winter too. Succulents though, those fleshy petal plants that look like a wonderful flower due to their symmetry, need the sun. And more sun than I can provide here in Philadelphia. Get a grow light for those if you do not have a window that has 8+ hours of sun.

This was a very helpful response. Thank you very much. I would consider preserve to be “so it makes it to spring.” I do have a prickly pear that has been with me for two years, so I must be doing something right. Thanks for being so helpful.

No problem. Right now for me in Philadelphia it’s all about making it to spring and nothing more. Prickly Pears and Pathos I now have under my belt. Some “opps I forgot about gnats again” issues but I’m Neem Oiling the culprits. Now Succulents on the other hand are a huge problem at my place. My plants are two propagations ahead of the Grimm Plant Reaper. And because it has been sunny the past two days, the indoor Light Bar has had very few guests sit around the bar.
