Heyo! Im a new plant owner and was told to start off with succulents. I got these three today, I have done some research about them and my brother in law knows a little about plants. I was wondering if I could get any advice?

hi 🤗 So what i can say is that bottom watering is the best option, it’s very easy to kill a succulent by overwatering. and bottom watering prevents that in a way that the plant drinks at its own pace. I also water mine about twice a month. succulents store water in their leaves so you don’t need to water too often, they do well in a airy fast draining soil so i use cactus soil! it’s the best for succulents. they do love light, i have mine facing south facing window they, getting plenty of light. and they’re really happy , best of luck !🤍

unfortunately there is no way to prevent overwatering except by watering a plant when it needs and no more. i’m not sure where this myth started, but there is no way for a plant to “know” how much water to drink. the longer the soil is saturated (soaking wet) the higher likelihood of rotting roots, which is why we use quick draining mixes for houseplants, where airflow cannot dry the soil out as fast. i recommend only watering your succulents when the soil is completely dry, using the pot’s weight or a bamboo chopstick as a guide. if you’re unsure, it’s always better to wait a few days. succulents will shrivel if it has been too long without water

Yes. I read a few articles saying to wait until the soil was bone dry, thank you for the advice I will keep this in mind! 💚

echoing a lot of what nancy said— a cacti blend (ideally amended with perlite or pumice) is a great choice when you repot. for now give them as much sunlight you can offer, outdoors is a great spot if the temperatures are reasonable in your area. i also recommend researching the specific species as this is just general succulent care advice. the plant on the left in the group photo i believe is a peperomia ferreyrae. they are a tropical plant and not a true succulent, and would rather you water a bit more frequently

A moisture meter really helped me. Water only when bone dry. Tons of sunlight. Those are the top two but other variables can depend on where you live. I’m in Portland Oregon and succulents have been very challenging for me but I think I’ve finally got the hang of it.

It is very hot where I live right now, so I’m trying to keep them inside so they don’t dry out or shrivel. I will look into a water meter though thank you! 💚
