Overgrown Jade needs help! I was gifted this jade years ago, and admit I have no idea how to care for it, outside of keeping it watered and alive. She’s growing in all the wrong directions, and I’m looking for advice on how to get her happy and healthy. The pot she’s in is maybe 6 inches wide/tall and very small. Should she be in a more shallow, wider pot? Do I need to cut her way down to fix the overgrowth? Any help or suggestions are much appreciated!

Jade plants have a fine root system. This pot looks good for the plant. To get rid of the crazy growth, yes, I would cut it off (and propagate!). You’ll see rings on the stems, cut just above one of them. It will sprout new growth from it. So cut with that in mind. For propagating the cutting, allow to callus over for 5-7 days, then put in water and wait for roots to grow! Seeing as there are long sections without leaves, I would probably cut that down to 3-4 rings below the leaves.

I’d say the growing in crazy directions might suggest it’s trying to stretch out wherever it can, suggesting it might need more sunlight. Perhaps move it closer to a window. I do agree that with that much growth in so many different directions, you might want to cut them into four separate jade plants. My best tip is to give it a bright spot to sit (mine likes the south window in my house where the light’s the brightest), making sure it was potted in cactus and succulent mix, and then neglecting the thing. That might sound scary, but less can be more with jades. Mine turned 30 this year and I love it to death cause he’s so hardy and the least maintenance out of any plant I’ve ever had. Only water it when the soil is absolutely bone dry AND if there’s changes in the condition of the leaves. This might sound insane, but I water mine about five times a year tops. Not saying I recommend watering it THAT little, but that’s what works for mine. Each one is different. Just check on it from time to time and water it. I definitely wouldn’t water it as much as the Planta app says but if that’s been working for yours so far with no problem with overwatering or root rot, it might be fine for yours.
