Need some help here. So this was a small hairy succulent cacti that I purchased 2 years ago. It started with 2 pads that were about the size of a dollar coin. Then stalks came last summer, and this summer pads. I know it’s a Prickly Pear of some kind but I cannot find anything similar in the Planta database. Thoughts? The entire thing is wobbling over like an inflatable arm waiving car dealership gimmick. (Ignore its pot mate T.C.)

Yours is super cool! I’m no help, just admiring lol. Dave_nonnon could help, he’s the cacti king! But he’ll have to just come upon this post since you can’t tag anyone or message on here, unfortunately….

Uh….hi. Well, that looks like the same plant. Mine goes from really fuzzy to less so depending on temperature change. There might be a hybrid of the “Snow” per this, but it seems more synonymous 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mine. It was outside for a bit, in a basement window with a grow light.

One other thing I thought about is the intense white versus yellowish areoles. The really hairy white ones are the original plant 😀

Well hello there Mr. Dave_nonnon (or is it Mr. Non? 🤭) I read through all the comments here. It looks as if I did guess correctly, it is the Snow Prickly Pear. When I purchased the tiny potted succulent he was only two pads tall with elongated pads on top. I had purchased him to be a pot mate with T.C. (the Toothpick Cactus.) T.C.’s former pot mate, a smooth and juicy succulent, had become too much temptation for a carnivorous lion in the home, 😼 Now we only purchase succulent’s that show up in the Jeopardy category: Things with Needles and Hairs. T.C. (the Toothpick Cactus) was given to me in Nov. 2019 from my Sister and Brother-in-law and Snow was purchased around Fall 2020. Both cacti remain outdoors unless it’s raining too much, then I bring them inside to dry out & I place them in a ground floor westerly facing window. They both grew taller last year but this year is ridiculous. The Snow prickly pear busted out with all the pads. It’s like Prickly Pad Pallouza at my place. Snow is way too long. The extra weight of the pads it’s just pulling down stalks. You know those corkscrew wooden glitter holiday sticks that you can purchase around Christmas? Those are thin and perfectly long enough to add a little bit of spinal support to Snow, but that has to be a temporary fix so… 1 - When do you suggest I should do pad surgery? And any surgical advice? It’s August so I’m thinking best do it now before Fall. 2 - Any advice on promoting (snow) follicle growth? Snow wasn’t even born when some people were using Sun-In back in the 80’s. We can’t blame that for the current lack of hair. Nor blame genetics. 👨🏼‍🦲 😉

Hey John. Dave here ha. My knowledge of all these things is about 2 years old, and a lot has been an experiment. The cool thing about that is some plants are down for the journey - I apologize to them later. My Snow started from three little stalks, and every other one in the current pot is a cutting from the same plant; I had another pot with some of the clippings, and it came back to life a few weeks after planting. With my first attempts, I read how and where to clip, did it last Fall. Success. Then I cut a couple off in December, left them sitting around, put them in a pot. Success. Then I put it in front of a screened window, where it still thrived. The only thing I remember reading about Snow when I got it was “it’s roots will fill any pot.” A house plant that wants to live? For now, I’m letting mine grow wild. I do have the same concern of it getting too heavy, but I think it can adapt. This photo was a year ago. I can’t believe how much it grew. It’s the year of the Snow.

Also, great job keeping two species looking very happy in the same pot.

Hello Dave, This is John’s part of the brain that was locked out of certain decisions in potting and placing these two cacti. Unfortunately, John’s abnormal brain did not tell us that he was just winging it. We were told he was doing risk analysis and pro/cons documentation. We discovered after a huge accident that he had done none. The accident occurred when the potted cacti toppled over to the floor. The snow, prickly pear suffered the worst both and all parts have been put into a pot that will not topple over. We will let you know how it goes long-term. Thank you, Responsible & bright side of John’s brain p.s. Abnormal side of John’s brain is confined to passing the salt and pepper at the table. Any other thoughts, actions, or commands from Abnormal and left hand has been instructed to immediately remove Abnormal section from skull. All’s well in this house. Dinner is even pleasant with plenty of salt & pepper. 😏😊😎

It solved its own problem, right? Sorry, man, but it’s gonna be okay. I knock everything over, and I can’t seem to do much to stop it. I have one cactus I knocked over so many times that I stopped repotting other than picking it up and popping it back into the pot; I once knocked it down while walking and somehow punted it into a shrub. It was also a last year friend and suffered much experimentation, and was seriously grey for a while. I gave up and put it in a window downstairs. Boom.

You’re going to get all kinds of fun sprouts off the top of those.
