Do you just use rocks as a topping or as the whole substrate?

as the whole substrate! this is a lava rock mixture and it works so well!

if you look up how lithops grow naturally it’s inbetween rocks and crevices or in sand

How do you know when to water? I have a difficult time knowing when to water succulents (beyond the basic knowledge that they should dry out)

i use a moisture meter for all mine except the lithops, i’m still trying to figure out the lithops watering schedule, but what i know is that they go dormant in the winter so you’re only supposed to water like once or twice then, but more frequently in the summer, these guys i don’t even use a watering can i just use rain water or distilled water in a spray bottle, these guys are super sensitive and i fear overwatering them so much, so i only mist the substrate when it gets super hot out like above 87, i’ve only lost 1 and it was because i watered too much, it seems so wrong not to water them at all but they’re naive to very hot places that get full sun, so keep that in mind with lithops. i wait till the moisture meter reads a 1, which is the lowest, to water all the rest of my succulents. i hope this helps!!🩵

I read an article that said only water 1-2 times a year😳

that’s a huge misconception i heard, which is why i choose to mist and use lava rock instead of sand, these guys are so difficult lol
1 j'aimeYah! I noticed the same with a few of mine this week. I’m hoping for flowers, but expecting new clones ha. August should be declared International Lithops month. Same with these jokers.

i’m just praying they continue to be happy over the winter 😬😬😬
1 j'aimeTo add one thing, yes mine looked really dead over the winter. The only time I watered was, per some advice I saw (I can’t remember the source), when the top leaf felt dried up
