Does anyone know why this plant has these roots growing outside of the soil? Also the leaves have been getting darker over time and I’m not sure why. Not enough sun? Not enough water?

hi! i've never raised a sedum and i'm not sure what would make the leaves turn dark but i think those rootlets are called air roots and succulents tend to grow them when stressed. A while back one of my kalanchoes sprouted a ton of air roots and on closer inspection the base of the plant was actually molded and dead!! I chopped the moldy base off and rerooted the whole thing in fresh soil- she's been fine ever since! My advice would be to check for root rot really well. Another thought- does your pot have drainage holes? Succulents really don't like wet feet! Hope any of this helps and good luck with your sedum!! 💚

If they are coming from the soil, it is root bound. If they are growing it from a stem from above, which I don’t see it, it is totally fine. It does look like it needs a tiny bit more light though.

I was told when aerial roots grow on succulents they are not getting enough water and reaching for moisture in the air. Your plant looks watered, maybe it’s a soil issue. I use a super gritty soil from bonsai jack that works well for my succulents. Good luck.

Definitely over watered, and not enough sun, i had the same problem with the same plant, it was my first plant, i pulled off all the dead parts, and had to let it basically dry out for a couple weeks, and then have to hold back on how much your watering it, and how often, just water it with very small amounts when the top of the soil looks dry, and i suggest a moister meter, they don’t need much water at all. good luck!

all of my succulents do this, they’re usually reaching for nutrients or soil but it’s not harmful. if the leaves are changing color though i would keep an eye on the light levels
