I found this little guy in our bin store a few days ago, I’ve never been able to successfully grow a plant 😅 so any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated

Looks like a jade tree and by the looks of it, needs more indirect light and som water. They are succulent like plants so they don’t like a lot of water and they have small root balls so keeping them in small pots until they’re outgrow them will help them thrive.

Not sure how long it was in the bin shed 🥲 definitely looking better than a few days ago but I’m not sure if I’ve watered it correctly because the soil is still bone dry and doesn’t seem to actually be absorbing water.

Sounds like it’s probably hydrophobic soil. You can bottom water and let it soak a long time but it might be worth just replacing the soil with a nice chunky cactus/succulent mix.

Get a bowl and add water and put the whole pot in it and let it sit for a couple hours at least

They need very bright light 💡 at least a 5000k daylight and I use a 36w led bulb by sansi I think it’s the cheapest option but this app has some high quality lighting too. Depends on your budget. Also if the edges of the leaves turn red it’s perfect and they are supposed to look like that. I love my jade plants! Anything Plants on YouTube has been my go to for help. He has one that is huge and a couple decades old Best of luck 🍀

I’d just like to start by saying I love the googly eyes and smile you drew on the pot

My jade plant is a cutting from my abuela’s and the cutting alone is 30. He’s a very hardy dude. From my experience, they thrive on neglect. I agree with the other folks saying to bottom water it. I hardly water mine and only when the soil is bone dry. The best tips I can give you is 1. Almost neglect it unless it starts to change. If leaves start to turn brown or shrivel, then consider if you’re overwatering or have too much or not enough light 2. Mine loves sitting RIGHT on a windowsill in the summer, then taking it off the sill in the winter but close enough that it still gets enough light. 3. Make sure the pot has holes for drainage and let the water completely drain from the pot after watering or soaking it. Root rot and overwatering are the main killers of this plant from my experience. 4. If it seems to grow MORE when you DONT water it, water it less often. When I was younger (again my jade is a solid 10 years older than me) my dad full on forgot its existence for 6 months. It grew a whole new stalk in that time, and looked great. It might sound crazy, but I water mine once about every three months, then hardly at all in the winter. It’s different for every plant, and especially where you live, but that’s what works for mine

My last tip is to breathe, and not stress about this lil guy. Jades are my absolute favorite plant of all time because they are very hardy, and mine hardly needs any maintenance aside from some trimming if it gets too big or repotting when it outgrows its pot. I definitely recommend them for beginners. An extra tip, although a lil silly, is to name it. I think like boats, it’s bad luck to not name them something. That might sound silly, but I think naming it like a pet or something makes it more like a part of the family, and something you’ll remember you need to take care of. You don’t have to water it all the time, but checking in on it often is the best way to keep it healthy and make small changes if it starts to not look so good.
