hi, so i got this aloe plant a little over a year ago and i feel like no matter what i do she will not grow. i can never get more than just a few arms before something happens and they get removed, plus i noticed recently she has no roots. for reference: she only gets water every 21ish days, IF the soil is dry (one of the arm looks a little dry so we may be slightly overdue). currently living in bright indirect light, but lately since it’s been nice i’ve been putting her outside in the sun for a few hours a day (she was attacked by my roommates dog which is why we have a broken arm). the pot is about 4.5” in diameter and has rocks and a hole for drainage. aside from maybe getting a smaller pot, is there anything else i should be doing? when she was thriving, it was on neglect so i’m assuming it’ll take time, but i want to make sure im doing things right so i don’t end back up at square one also please excuse the forceps, i didn’t have anything else to support her. and please be nice or ill cry.

    Are you using fertilizer/plant food? I’ve found that it helps a lot.

    Hi there, don’t feel bad, it’s all a learning process. Succulents aren’t as easy to care for as people like to make out imo. I would be tempted to do 2 things with this baby given its current situation: first is to cut off one of the leaves carefully, leave it to dry out for a day or 2 and then pop it into about 1-2cm of water to propagate, changing the water every few days. This would be my insurance cutting in case the mother plant doesn’t survive. For the mother plant I would make a nice fresh batch of succulent soil and repot into a tiny pot. I’d also probably keep doing what you’re doing in terms of light if you don’t have a grow light you can use (ie allowing it to have some sun every day). Best of luck with your baby! 🌿🌿🌿

    Definitely follow through on a smaller terracotta pot - if there’s basically no roots like you say then the soil is probably holding onto too much water. I also suggest potting it higher in the pot so that the soil and the bottom of the leaves can see the sun (not quite as big of a deal if you keep it outside). The leaves definitely look pretty thirsty - I usually water mine when the soil is bone dry like you said and the outer leaves get the tiniest bit wrinkled.

    Definitely a WAY smaller pot. I'd probably go down to a 2 inch terracotta pot. If possible, I'd use a succulent/cactus soil mix. If there are no roots, the leaves will look dry no matter how wet the soil is. After repotting don't water for a couple weeks. I WOULD NOT cut off a leaf for propagation, as I'm fairly certain Aloe's can't be propagated through leaves, they need part of the base to propagate. They usually prop through pups. Additionally, Aloe's, like most succulents want some direct light. A south facing window would be best, if they're in any other window, I'd suggest keeping it right up against the glass so it can get as much light as possible. Taking it outside is a good idea. Once it's acclimated to the sun it can take direct sunlight. It sounds like your watering is good, I think your pot is just way too big and that's why your aloe is struggling so much. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can get it healthy again!

      That part of acclimating to the Sun is important. I knew this when I moved my yucca outside but for a variety of reasons I had to place it right into the morning sun and it's definitely gotten scorched. A little at a time is the way to go.

    I agree with the others and yourself regarding a smaller pot. Do not put rocks in the bottom. Rocks in the bottom of the pot will only raise the water table and result in higher chance of further root rot. If the base of the plant is soft or mushy it would indicate a serious problem especially for such a small plant. I cactus soil is a good idea as well. Your light and water seems to be good. I think the real problem is the lack of roots. Try a little root stimulator that might help or even rooting hormone if there are no roots at all. I agree with redskid, I would not try and propagate a leaf. You could remove the failing leaves but you don't have to.
