Does anyone have any recommendations for cacti and succulents that I can plant in my back yard? I have a small patch of dirt in front of my door and I would love to have my our little garden. It’s shaded during the afternoon but gets the evening sun.

A good way to look for cacti/succulents to put in-ground is to first figure out what hardiness zone you’re in. I do this by googling the hardiness zone for my zip code. After that I would google what succulents/cacti are able to survive outside all year in my hardiness zone!! Hope this helps :)

I do live in the Central Valley so it’s very hard dry ground. Whenever I would plant flowers in the ground I would dig up the top layer and lay soil down. Should I do that with cactus soil?

Personally I would. However I’m not really experienced in growing cacti/succulents in ground. I do know about the hardiness zones and how to find what cacti/succulents grow in them because of my partner. I would say do your research, I don’t personally feel like I know enough to give advice for that question!

It really depends on where you live. For instance I live in TN and the only cactus that does well all year outdoors where I am is the prickly pear cactus.
