Hello! I’ve had this snake plant for about 6 months now, and it’s been doing very well until just recently—it’s leaning over and has a few brown/dry patches on the leaves. It’s been inside for a few months since it’s too cold outside, and it’s about 5 feet from a window. Is there anything I can do to prevent the leaning or should I just chop and prop the wonky ones? Also, is there anything I can do to prevent the crazy leggy growth on the littler succs? There wasn’t any info on the tag but it looks like Bear’s Paw, Ghost Echeveria, Mother of Thousands, Elephant Bush, and Aloe Vera. Any tips are appreciated šŸ¤

My snake plant also tends to have its long leaves lean out. In fact, one of them did fall over, and that’s when I started using large chopsticks to help stabilize it. I also used some sticky garden tape, which you can see. I like the look of my snake plant with the leaves spread out; it’s so pretty that way! However, this is a great help in keeping your plant healthy. Good luck!

Thanks so much Lynda! That’s a really great idea! I agree—snake plants look so pretty with the leaves spread out, but it’s starting to block my doorway šŸ˜‚

PS. I have no idea what those dry spots are. Could it be mechanical, like somehow your plant was injured? Light wise, your snake plant should be just fine!

Sounds good! The only thing I can think of is that it was outside during the summer and maybe it got burned somehow? It looks almost like a scar, so I’m not sure. Thanks again!

Are there only two of those dry, damaged spots on your snake plant? It looks very healthy, and I don’t even see any dried tips, so you must have taken very good care of it! I would have to think that when your plant was outside, that it was somehow bruised. Maybe you’ll get some better advice soon. Again, best of luck! PS. You said you’d only had this plant for six months??? This is a very mature snake plant, and a very pretty one at that. So, whatever you do, don’t chop and prop; stake it, and enjoy it! I think a lot of people would kill for that plant!

Yep, it’s just these spots. The bottom ones look like they were caused by dryness but the top one looks like a callous/scar of some sort; it doesn’t penetrate all the way through the leaf though, only the one side. I think you might be right about the bruising there! Thank you so much for your kind words! I got it when it was pretty mature already, but it’s been growing like crazy and there’s several pups in the center! I really appreciate the support 🄰

You know, rethinking our conversation, I might go ahead and do a chop and prop on those two leaves. I can see there are lots of new leaves coming up, and you mentioned there were more pups on the way. With all those new leaves, you soon wouldn’t notice any bare spots!

I think I will, just with those two leaves. I’ve propped one leaf from a different plant and it’s doing so well, so I should be successful with that!

Great! You’re gonna have so many babies, you’ll be like the mother in the shoe, you won’t know what to do!

I read a post way back that putting different succulents in the same pot should only be fine if the need the same watering. So I actually separated mine so none of my pots are mixed.

Thank you so much for the tip! I was actually thinking about that, especially because all of the succulents besides the snake plant are looking extremely leggy.

Yeah if the sucs are leggy they need a lot more light

I was surprised to learn snake plants sometimes will get a brown spot like this if they don’t have enough humidity.

That’s really interesting! I have a few humidifiers spread around the house to keep the humidity high enough during the winter, but that’s a great thing to watch out for!

oh my, all those different plants are in one planter? Mother of thousands reproduce like crazy ( hence the name), when/ if you can, you may want to separate all the different species. The elephant bush has different lighting needs than your snake plant.

Yep, that’s how it came when I bought it! I’ve run out of pots and soil but I’m going to separate them as soon as possible.
