I recently bought a burro’s tail/donkey tail and so far it’s looking good, but I killed my last one and I’d like to figure out what to avoid before I end up killing this one. My best guess as to what happened with the last was that I overwatered it and it wasn’t getting enough sun to dry the soil out between waterings, but any tips on how others keep theirs alive would be greatly appreciated! I’d like to get her big enough to put in a hanging planter if possible. I also have a few leaves that fell off in the repotting process so any tips on propagating these guys would be a big help. 😊

Mine is still pretty new but not dead yet lol. I have it in soil mixed with quite a lot of perlite and I don’t water it too often. I also keep it directly under a grow light. Mine dropped some leaves when I potted it and I just left them and they’re already growing and doing their own thing.

Thanks for the tip! Do you buy a certain brand or mix the perlite into a soil mix yourself?

I mixed it into my soil. I just got some random bag of perlite off Amazon and use foxfarm ocean forest soil. Typically I try to stick with bonsai soil and mix it with my foxfarm but I had run out at the time that I needed to repot my sedum burro’s tail unfortunately.

I recommend getting a pebble soil. After you have a pebble soil then when you water it completely submerge it under that water and then when it starts to bubble set a 5min timer. When the timer goes up remove and set it back in the window do this every month.

Interesting 🤔 I’ve never heard of pebble soil. I’ll have to look into it! Thanks!

ive seen a few places putting succulents in sphagnum moss and even on some bags of moss they have this BT planted in it not sure what the consensus on this is but we will see how mine does in it it seems happy

Huh 🤔 I’ve used sphagnum moss before for my snail terrarium, of specifically cause it could be misted and help hold humidity that provided the moisture my snails needed. I’ve seen it on the Planta app as an option for foliage plants, but not for any succulents yet. Best of luck with your plants! I’d be interested to see how it turns out with succulents!

Definitely let the soil completely dry out between waterings, and consider adding more perlite to the soil, so there is better drainage and the roots aren’t sitting in wet soil for as long. Does this pot have drainage holes? That is very important for succulent-type plants. I’ve also started putting all my succulents in terracotta pots (from the dollar store) and that helps when you’re an over waterer. Good luck this time around! My Burro’s Tail is just a wee little baby, I can’t wait for him to grow.

Thanks for the tips! I’m planning on picking up a draining pot at the store tomorrow, as he came in two separate 1-in pots that were too small for me to place both plants in one pot. I’ll try to pick up some perlite too.
