This is Lofty I’ve had him 6 years. He flowers at least once a year. But a friend told me they only flower when they are stressed and he needs repotting. Is that correct? If this is correct as Lofty is already over 3 foot tall and rather heavy and big is there a way I can thin out the stems without harming him and avoid the need to repot?

Snake plants tend to bloom when they have reached they’re root bound. This is technically “stress” but some plants don’t mind being root bound to a certain degree. I would say if you haven’t repotted it in the last 2-3 years it’s probably time. More so for a soil refresh than anything else. You could prune the plant and the roots to keep it in the same pot but I’d recommend just going up a pot size.

and if it’s actively blooming don’t repot it, wait until the blooms die off.

I repotted him in 2022 (I call him a him but I’ve no idea, could be a her!). How do you prune the roots out of interest?

I don’t know the exact best practice since I’ve never done it but I bet there’s some good YouTube vids on it

snake plants bloom when they’re really thriving though, too! lots of light, proper watering, older plants are all good for encouraging blooms — could be that you’re doing everything right and this is a thank you 😊

I think it helps if you give them a name too, they seem to appreciate that 😆

He’s in his happy place ! So handsome!😍 it’s rare to see a snake plant with no dry tips. Mine dried during shipping!😆

Oh no 😥. I rescued Lofty from a market stall when he was still a baby. 😀
