My string of pearls is starting to look shriveled, and I noticed it’s lost some pearls from the middle of some strands. I’m a notorious overwaterer and have already lost one to root rot. I’ve been careful not to over water this one. The soil is bone dry, maybe a little hydrophobic, last watered about 2 weeks ago. Is she just thirsty?

They’re hard to care for needs well draining soil and one of the most common things needed is top lighting they appear to do best from my research with top lighting

You should also try bottom watering for tricky plants

I think it just needs water. If the soil is hydrophobic, it might not have absorbed much water last time either. Remember, overwatering is how often not how much at once. You might want to squish the pot some if it is plastic to break up the dirt enough to take on more water. Or if it’s ceramic, you can poke holes in the dirt with something like a chopstick to break up the dirt. Then I would suggest you put it in a bowl of water filled up to the dirt line of the pot. Leave it until it doesn’t feel dry and hydrophobic anymore. Might take an hour. Don’t worry, the dirt can only take so much water so unless you have too much or regular dirt, it won’t be too much. After it’s fixed, take it out of the water and let all the water run out of the drain holes until it stops dripping. Then go back to watering whenever the pearls look less plump. The plant will tell you when it needs water. In this case, it used a lot of the stored water in its leaves which is why they shriveled up.
