Helloooo. I know I could easily Google this, but thought I’d come to the lovely plant community instead. My spider plant isn’t taking water like it used to. It’ll sit at the top and *slowly* take it. Is it possible for soil to become hydrophobic over time? Should I repot in better soil? Thank you!
Yes, soil can become hydrophobic. You can try watering your plant with it sitting in a dish/pan/tray, so it can continue to absorb the water that runs out, assuming there’s a drainage hole.

You can also *gently* aerate the soil with a skewer being careful not to do too much damage to the roots.

Your plant might also be root bound and there's not enough soil left to absorb the water quickly anymore. You may want to pull the plant out of the pot and see what's really going on in there
1 likeThis is common use a shovel or hands to make a hole around the plant and use a spray bottle then pat the soo back down
