What would you do in this situation? I want to chop my golden pothos and extend its moss pole, but having living sphagnum and ferns sprouting from it has been a real treat and I don't necessarily want them gone. Do I make a little sphagnum bin out of them? I tried pulling a couple smaller ferns out and giving them pots with sphagnum; all but one died. I'm also considering asking in the fern group since I'm not super knowledgeable about ferns.
You can just leave it there if you want. For transplanting, they're a bit on the young side, so try to be very gentle while taking them out and take a little extra sphagnum with them to avoid root damage. Ferns like lots of humidity, frequent watering, and less light than most plants. Part shade is good for most species, but some will do better with full shade. Mosses will happily accept just about any lighting. They like high humidity. Having them planted with another plant helps, since the deeper soil can hold moisture longer. If you plant a moss as a standalone, it will need misting almost daily. Yours is blooming, which will help it get established in its new spot. It can also help to use metal staples to hold moss into the soil since it takes time to reroot; I cut paperclips in half for that.
1 like I've been thinking it over, and I think I might leave them. I'd already cut the lower part of the pothos into sections to propagate, but maybe I'll just let them reshoot where they are and have a completely insane jungle-on-a-pole situation until the whole thing goes south and I have to pull it apart 😅
0 likes I forgot to ask my question 🤦 I am interested in growing more sphagnum, maybe in a terrarium-style setup. Would I need to move the moss now, before the capsules pop their little caps? I could probably get more growing again, but this seems like a cool opportunity
