I’m new to Planta and I want to get the profiles right for all my little guys. Some plants don’t have drainage holes but I do have rocks at the bottom. Can I select “drainage holes” in the profile?

ChrissyI would advise against it. There are people that will say that their plant hasn’t died with rocks on the bottom but that is not the norm. You should drill holes or repot in my opinion.

Succulent❤️MamaYes, drainage holes are super important and separate from rocks. Rocks or not, you still need drainage holes. Or at least make sure you click “no” on the drainage holes.

Definitely not. Rocks can actually have the adverse effect. They can create a tension barrier and actually stop the water from draining out of the soil. I HIGHLY recommend (unless you are an experienced grower) to repot, remove the rocks, and definitely put it in something with drainage holes.

If they’re being used to enhance/substitute drainage then no rocks, never, anywhere :) Don’t freak out if you have a bunch with rocks, but try to repot them in the next little bit into pots with drainage. And make sure you are using a wooden skewer to check the soil moisture before any watering you do.

Two things: 1) no, rocks don’t equal drainage. If you want to use a pretty pot with no drainage, you could put a plastic pot that does have drainage inside the decorative pot. Just remove it to water and place back after watering. 2) you will get mixed opinions on rocks so I will give you mine to throw in the hat with everyone else’s. 😅 I have used them with succulents with great success in a few specific ways. I add very small rocks in with dirt sometimes to increase the quick draining of a particular soil. Has to be small enough to come out of drainage holes without getting stuck so super tiny. I have used big ones to partially block large drainage holes to keep dirt from coming out. The rock can’t be flat and has to not restrict water flow. Test it after repotting to ensure water runs out freely. I have used a layer of rocks at the bottom of the pot to make sure the dirt wasn’t deeper than the roots could reach. Again they have to be big and round enough to not clog the drainage holes. Test after repotting to make sure water still comes right out. I sometimes use rocks to support plants after repotting until their roots get more established into the dirt. I do recommend against using a layer of rocks on the bottom instead of drainage holes. The extra water just gets trapped in the bottom breeding bacteria and causing root rot. Extra water needs to run out of the pot.
