Hi planty friends! I’m wondering if anyone has any tips on how to avoid overwatering/getting root rot on high water demand plants. (ie basil, petunias, turtle vine, chives, tomatoes, etc etc) Planta is recommending that I water some of these plants everyday and despite them being in a full sun/SW window and with chunky soil that has orchid bark and perlite mixed in, I’m finding I’m skipping watering them out of fear of getting root rot. I measure with my moisture metre and usually these plants are solidly in the moist range from about 1/4 of the way down to the bottom of the pot. How do y’all water these kinds of plants?

    I had the same issue with my basil. Planta was telling me to water every other day, but the soil would still be super wet. I changed it to a custom schedule of every 5 days. Sometimes it doesn’t even need watered that often. I use a moisture meter and water the basil when it’s at a 2 or lower.

    A good piece of advice I heard from someone on here was to use Planta as a reminder to check on your plants, and that you don’t necessarily have to water every time it says to as long as you think it’s okay! Sometimes my plants are already moist and don’t need watering but the notification reminds me to just check on em

    Yeah I have 40 different plants in my house. I put them in planta mostly so I remember to check each individual plant. I typically check the soil and the roots before watering and make sure it’s looking healthy. I if it needs water, then water it but if not, depending on how the soil is, I’ll either snooze or just cancel the reminder until next time. Some plants I’ve put in a custom schedule for. You know your plants and their environment better than anyone else and if you feel like it’s too much watering then adjust from there 😊 best of luck!

    Thanks all! From all y’all’s advice sounds like I’m on the right track and Planta might be over estimating the watering. I thought I was being a bad plant mum with constantly skipping their watering bc the metre was saying they’re still moist. Perhaps a custom schedule like @send_nodes suggested would be best. Thanks again!!! 🥰🥰🥰
