Hey guys, so i became a plant mom like a month ago but then my birthday came around and i am flooded with 14 plants as a first time plant mom and I NEED TIPS. When should I repot my money tree and my elephant ear plant? and should i be fertilizing in the winter since they’re indoor? and my trade scantia leaves are getting little dry brown spots on it lately and i’m not sure what to do. Also tips for the best overall soil and remedies for dry air?
First of all, take a deep breath… your plants are going to be all right! It took me a long time to figure out my plants, and I am still working on it, every day! Planta people will shortly come to your aid, now, and whenever you have a question. I can help you a bit with humidity. I’ll send a few pictures of the small humidity monitors I use; they’re cheap, and they’re from Amazon. Also, I’ll send another pic of the humidifier I use. I like it because it doesn’t have to be filled as often as other humidifiers . Try to keep your humidity levels between 50 to 60%. That’s easy with a humidifier, and also with the use of the little monitors, so you can see exactly what the humidity is around your plants. If you’re in a hurry, and I can tell you you are, you can also use plates or dishes, that you fill with H2O… just enough so that your plant pot can’t absorb water through the drainage hole; otherwise, you would get root rot if they sat in water all the time. A lot of humidity trays show decorative rocks being used on the bottom which the plant pot sits on, but that’s not a necessity. 1 j'aimethank you Lynda! i ordered a little monitor since I have a humidifier and then i’ll see if it’s doing the job good enough or not. but definitely considering buying the one you mentioned since i have to fill mine once a day.
1 j'aime To answer your question, yes…that pot is sitting in water, but it doesn’t have a drainage hole in the bottom of it. It’s a ceramic pot that has a catch bowl on the bottom of the pot for drainage. Lots of decorative pots do not have drainage holes in the bottoms of them; for these type of pots, you can just sit them in the water. Those with drainage holes must be set up on something, so that, obviously, they are not sitting in water. That’s where decorative rock or glass pebbles, or whatever, can raise the plant above the water level, so that they’re not drinking H2O all the time! If you need info on humidity trays, let me know, and I’ll text you the ones I bought on Amazon; I think they’re really good. I typically report when I notice roots growing from the drainage hole. I try and fertilize every 3ish months because I use a slow release fertilizer (miracle gro) and that's worked really well for me. Best overall soil is well draining. I mix my own when I have time and I'm sure others on here have good recommendations for that too but in pinch potting soil from a store will work. Humidifiers are my solution to dry air, but I only recently started using them and my plants were fine even in my super dry environment. They definitely appreciate the humidity though.
